Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
48 years ago today, on the 11th August 1976, Lance Corporal John George Mackey, referred to as Jack, 20th Battalion (Reg No-4189), labourer from Nymagee, New South Wales and 14 Docker Street, Marks Point, N.S.W. (1949), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 87. ANGLICAN 3-212. 54.
Born at Nymagee, New South Wales on the 26th November 1888 to William Rich, died 23.4.1941, Sutcliffe Street, Mort's Estate, Lithgow, N.S.W., age 85, and Catherine Jane Mackey nee Grenfell, died 16.5.1946, Lithgow Hospital, N.S.W., age 80, mother of 7 sons and 2 daughters; husband of Lillian May Mackey nee Speed, married?, died 15.9.1963, Belmont, N.S.W., age 70, sleeping at ANGLICAN 3-212. 52, Jack enlisted on the 11th October 1915 at Holsworthy, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A67 Orsova on the 11th March 1916.
Wounded in action - 26.7.1916 (GSW chest & back, Battle of Pozieres), 14.7.1918 (GSW chest, leg, groin, mild).
Granted furlough from 29.9.1916 to 17.10.1916.
Accidently injured 29.9.1917, crushed left foot, mild.
Invalided to England 21.7.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 25.1.1919.
Jack arrived home on the 14th March 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 9th May 1919.
I have not located Mr. Mackey’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Jack’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
