Augustus Hubert Neville Lewis was born Greater Lambeth, London, England in 1876 to parents Augustus Mantell Lewis & Phillis Lucy Lewis (nee Neville). 

According to information provided by his widow for the Roll of Honour – Augustus Lewis served in Boer War in South African Constabulary. He came to Australia around 1907.

The 1913 Australian Electoral Roll for the division of Middle Harbour, subdivision of Manly recorded Augustus Hubert Neville Lewis, Draughtsman from 29 Stuart Street.

 

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 26th March, 1915 at Holsworthy, Sydney, New South Wales as a 39 year old, married, Survey Draughtsman from “Orlando”, Sydney Road, Manly, New South Wales.

Private Augustus Hubert Neville Lewis, Service number 40, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Suevic (A29) on 13th June, 1915 with the 4th Light Horse Brigade, 12th Light Horse Regiment, Headquarters.

He proceeded to join M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) at Gallipoli on 24th August, 1915.

On 12th October, 1915 Private Lewis was transferred to No. 3 General Hospital at Mudros. He was admitted to 3rd Australian General Hospital at Mudros on 3rd November, 1915 with Jaundice. Private Lewis disembarked at Alexandria from Oxfordshire on 27th January, 1916 from Mudros.

Private Lewis was listed on the Nominal Roll of Staff of 3rd Australian General Hospital at Abbassia on 7th July, 1916. He was struck off strength on 12th August, 1916 on being invalided to England. Private Lewis was invalided to England on Kanowna from Alexandria on 13th August, 1916.

(Note: The Statement of Service form has different details: “Admitted to 3rd A.G.H. on 3.7.16. Discharged to duty 7.8.16.” The Purport form listed “7.8.16 Discharged to duty. 28/8/16 Admitted to 1st Western Gen. Hosp.”)

He was admitted to Netherfield Rd Auxiliary Hospital, Liverpool, England on 26th August, 1916 with slight heat exhaustion. He was admitted to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital at Southall on 4th September, 1916 with Heat Exhaustion.

Private Lewis was granted furlough on 17th October, 1916 & was discharged from 2nd Auxiliary Hospital for furlough on 18th October, 1916 & was then to report to Perham Downs.

On 2nd November, 1916 Private Lewis was marched in to No. 1 Command Depot at Perham Downs & was medically classified as B1 A.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire & the county of Dorset. Later Training & Convalescing Units were combined under the one Command Depot.

Private Lewis was transferred to & taken on strength of 16th Field Ambulance in England on 19th March, 1917 from 3rd Australian General Hospital.

He was sent sick to Clearing Hospital on 22nd April, 1917 from 16th Field Ambulance at Wareham. He was admitted to Wareham Military Hospital, Dorset, England on 22nd April, 1917 with P.U.O. (Pyrexia (fever) of unknown origin).

 

Private Augustus Hubert Neville Lewis died at 10.45 am on 27th April, 1917 at Military Hospital, Wareham, Dorset, England from Pneumonia.

He was buried in West Norwood Cemetery & Crematorium, London, England – Plot number 106.27377 and now has a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone. 

From the Burial Report “Father & Mother (Mr & Mrs A. M. Lewis of 31 Claylands Road, Clapham Road, S.W.) and several friends were present at the funeral.”
