Herbert David Parry-Okeden was born in 1889 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. David, as he was known, was the third and youngest son of William Parry-Okeden and Gertrude Wall.
A station overseer in civilian life, he enlisted on 1 December 1914 in the Australian Imperial Force and was attached to the 2nd Light Horse Brigade, with which he saw action at Gallipoli. Later, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Camel Corps, where he took part in the Battle of Romani. Transferring to the newly-intoduced Australian Flying Corps at the end of 1916, he was promoted to Lieutenant and seconded to the 19th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps.
Lieutenant Parry-Okeden was wounded in action over France in May 1917. He was flying over Mons scouting German lines when he was attacked by several German planes. Although he was hit eight times through his left shoulder, an eye, the face, and head, he managed to kept his plane balanced and landed safely over 68 miles away.
He was subsequently promoted Flight Commander in the Australian Flying Corps, but as he was not considered fit enough to rejoin his flight, he was repatriated to Australia late 1917.
His brother, Lieutenant Uvedale Edward Parry-Okeden was awarded the Miliray Cross for gallant service at Gallipoli.
Herbert David Parry-Okeden married Hilda Mary Webster in 1920 in Brisbane. They were to have a son and two daughters.
With outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the RAAF with the rank of Flight Lieutenant, serving in flight training until discharged in December 1944.
Flight Lieutenant Herbert David Parry-Okeden passed away at Malvern, Victoria on 25 May 1950.
