John’s actual name was William John Greenhill, but as was a common practice at the time he preferred to use his middle name. John left Melbourne with the 177th on the Euripides on 11 September 1916 reaching Plymouth, England on 26 October and proceeded to France. He was hospitalised with trench feet at Etaples in France in November 1917. John served throughout France for the duration of the war and returned to Australia on 29 August 1919 and was discharged on 13 October.
