Son of William and Eliza Layton of Kempsey, NSW formerly of Nyngan, NSW.

Brother of William Layton who was died of wounds on 17 October 1917 while serving with the 33rd Battalion and was buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. Plot XX11, Row B, Grave 11; Stanley Layton who returned to Australia on 3 December 1918 having served with the 2nd Battalion; and Walter Layton who returned to Australia on 12 May 1919 having served with the 13th Battalion
