Bert Mullarkey, a school teacher with the NSW Department of Education was well known in sporting circles, being a member of the St'. George's football First Grade Club. He was also a member of the St. George's Harrier Club (now extinct).
Brothers:
650 Pte Clarence MULLARKEY, 2nd Bn, served at the Landing, evacuated August 1915 with debility, returned to Australia, enteric, 11 March 1916;
2nd Lieutenant Nial Joseph MULLARKEY, 1st Bn, killed in action, 5 November 1916;
Lance Corporal Kevin Vincent MULLARKEY, 20th Bn, returned to Australia, 22 February 1917. Shot in the back at Pozieres 4 August 1916. Spinal wound, paralysis. Died of wounds 30 March 1918 Randwick Military Hospital NSW, still only 20 years of age.
Lieutenant James Charles Mullarkey 2nd Pioneer Bn, returned to Australia 13 February 1917, family reasons, after he asked for furlough as his wife died in 1916, and 2 of his brothers had been killed, the other 2 returned to Australia incapacitated. He was recommended for the MC but not awarded.
