Private Bernard John King (Service Nos:V180834/VX151855) initially served in the ACMF from 2 January 1942 to 27 July 1945, when he enlisted 'in the field' in Brisbane QLD in the AIF. Private King served with 14th/32nd Infantry Battalion in New Guinea and New Britain (1 July 1943 - 24 May 1945). He served with the BCOF in Japan (12 March 1946 - 4 October 1947) and was attached to 14th/32nd Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 9 October 1947.
Bernard was born in Morwell, Victoria in 1923, eldest of three children of Leon (Len) Herbert William King (b1885 in Macarthur, Victoria) and his second wife Mary (Molly) Margaret Kelly (b1896 at Tower Hill, Victoria). Len served in WWI (Private; Service No:87) and was a Divorcee with three children, working as a Boilermaker, when he and Molly married in 1928 in Melbourne - Molly was working in Melbourne as a Telegraphist. Len and Molly settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Len worked as a Boilermaker.
Bernard was a Timber Worker in Melbourne in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, he was working as a Plasterer in Melbounre in 1949 when he married Phyllis Anne Wilkinson (b1926 at Swan Hill, Victoria) - Phyllis was working in Melbourne as a Hairdresser. Bernard and Phyllis settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Bernard worked as a Plasterer until retirement in the mid 1990s. Phyllis died in 1998 and Bernard in 2013.
