William Bede Murphy enlisted in 1915 having just turned 17 years of age. He was raised in Hamilton, New South Wales and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School. His parents were deceased at the time of enlisting and he gave his next of kin as his brother James Murphy of Hamilton.
His eldest brother, who was much older, 2451 Lce. Cpl. Thomas Christopher Murphy 2nd Australian Pioneers, had died of Pozieres wounds in England on 15 August 1916, aged 41. As the eldest male sibling, James Murphy received all of the medals and entitlements of his two brothers.
