Private William Herbert Ian Monk (Service No:WX39422) initially served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W92516) from 4 August 1942 to 18 May 1943 with 4th Infantry Battalion. Private Monk enlisted in the AIF on 19 May 1943 and served with 4th Infantry Battalion in New Guinea (10 January 1944 - 5 March 1945 and 2 May 1945 - 16 May 1946). Private Monk was attached to 4th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 24 June 1946.
Ian was born in 1924 in Perth WA, son of Edward Monk (b1889 in Essex, England) and Helen Spalding (b1899 in London, England). Edward (a Soldier in the AIF) and Helen married in Suffolk, England in 1919 and arrived in Fremantle WA in 1920 with their first son on board the Kigoma. Edward had immigrated as a Farmhand in 1913, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Armadale and working as a Farm Labourer and Teamster in Brookton, WA before enlisting in the AIF. Edward and Helen established Clavering Farm at Latham via Kalgoorlie WA, where they raised their family and Edward was a Farmer. Helen died in 1946 and Edward in 1965.
Ian worked as a Garage Attendant in Dandarragan WA and was a Motor Mechanic in Latham when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge in 1946, Ian returned to Latham, where he died in 1952.
