Edward Michael Carroll was born on 8 May 1888 in Rockhampton, Queensland, to Timothy Carroll and Mary Carroll (née Ryan).

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Lismore on 19 August 1915, aged 27. At the time of his enlistment, he was single and employed as a billiard marker. On 31 March 1916, Edward embarked for overseas service aboard HMAT Star of Victoria from Sydney.

Carroll served on the Western Front in France, and his service record documents multiple periods of hospitalisation due to illness, including influenza and trench fever, both of which were common among troops serving in front-line conditions. While serving in England, Carroll married Emma Elizabeth Beazer on 29 November 1919 at the Church of the Holy Apostles, Clifton, in the Registration District of Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.

In January 1920, Edward Michael Carroll and his wife embarked for Australia aboard the Orient liner SS Osterley. They subsequently settled in Brisbane, where he was employed as a labourer.

Private Edward Michael Carroll died on 17 April 1950, aged 62, and was buried in Anzac Portion 8, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. Following his death, his widow Emma, returned to Bristol, England, where she died in 1956. The couple had no children.

After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.

We have remembered him.
