William Michael Hayes was the sixth child and third son of John Leslie Hayes and Alice Maria Conroy. He grew up at Paddington and Woollahra in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

During WW2 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF at the age of 21, and served overseas in the Middle East and in New Guinea.

William never married. His mother lived with him at Maroubra until her death in 1970. William remained at Maroubra until his death in 1987 at the age of 67.
