Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Kevin John O'Ryan (Service Nos:V155459/VX134346) initially enlisted in the ACMF with 2 Brigade Group on 27 December 1941, and was a Driver in Chidlow, WA attached to 22 Coy AASC when he enlisted 'in the field' in the AIF on 19 April 1943. Private O'Ryan was attached to 16, 17 and 25 Australian Infantry Training Battalions (AITB) before embarking on 28 March 1945 with 2/48th Infantry Battalion from Cairns for Morotai on board the Van Heeutz, en route for Tarakan on board the Manoora. Private O'Ryan disembarked in Brisbane from Morotai on 14 December 1945, and was attached to 2/48th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 14 August 1946. His father served in WWI, and two brothers in WWII.

Kevin was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1922, second of three children of Charles Arnold O'Ryan (b1896 in Carlton, Melbourne, Victoria) and Nancy Conquit (b1898 in Wodonga, Victoria). Charles - a Machine Worker in Melbourne - served with the Militia and AIF in WWI, and he and Nancy married in Melbourne in 1920. They settled in Melbourne and later Dandenong, where they raised their family and Charles was an Iron Worker, Labourer and Fitter.

Kevin worked as a Paperwinder in a Paper Mill before enlisting in the Army in 1941. Following his Discharge, Kevin was a member of the Dandenong Lifesaving and Swimming Club, and was working as a Clerk in 1948 when he married Catherine (Kitty) Mary White (b1925 in Dandening, Victoria). Kevin and Kitty lived in Melbourne and Dandenong, where they raised their family and Kevin worked as a Clerk. Kitty died in 2000 and Kevin in 2008 - his granddaughter wrote 'When I go back to school after the holidays, it will be grandparents week. I will be very sad you won't be there. I miss your gentle smile and touch' (myTributes: 2008).
