With his older brother Alan, Corporal Colin Lindsay Hanley (Service Nos:V38487/VX131757) initially served in the ACMF with 46th Infantry Battalion (3 October 1941 - 7 January 1943), and was 'in the field' attached to 114 Australian Light Anti Aircraft Regiment on 8 January 1943 when he enlisted in the AIF. Corporal Hanley Served in New Guinea (27 October 1943 - 10 August 1944), and in 1945 was attached to 1 Australian Broadcasting Maintenance Section. At Discharge on 20 March 1946 Corporal Hanley was attached to 114 Australian Light Anti Aircraft Regiment.

Colin was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1919, youngest of seven children of Launcelot Bethanga Hanley (b1883 in Bethanga, Victoria) and Mary (Nellie) Ellen Davidson (b1881 in Geelong, Victoria). Launcelot (an Engineer in Drouin) and Nellie (a Costumier in Melbourne) married in 1908 in Melbourne, and lived in Casterton, where Launcelot was an Engineer. In 1918 the family settled in Melbourne, where Launcelot worked as a  Welder and Mechanic.

Colin worked for Climax Radios Pty Melbourne in Sales and Service before enlisting in the Army in 1941. He was in Melbourne in 1945 when he married Dorothy Penn Sanders (b1920 in Brisbane, QLD) - Dorothy was a Hairdresser working in Ayr QLD. Following his Discharge from the Army, Colin and Dorothy settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Colin worked as a Radio Salesman and Stock Comptiler. Colin died in 1988 and Dorothy in 2007.
