Private Alan Norman Hanley (Service Nos:V39665/VX131756) initially served in the ACMF (31 January 1941 - 7 January 1943) with 46th Battalion, and was 'in the field' attached to 114 Australian Light Anti Aircraft (AA) Regiment when he enlisted in the AIF on 8 January 1943 as a Signalman - graded Operator Signals, regraded Electrician. Private Hanley served in New Guinea (21 October 1943 - 17 June 1944), and was attached to 1 Australian Broadcasting Maintenance Section in 1945. At Discharge on 20 March 1946, Signalman Hanley was attached to 114 Australian Light Anti Aircraft Regiment.

Alan was born in Casterton, Victoria in 1917, sixth of seven children of Launcelot Bethanga Hanley (b1883 in Bethanga, Victoria) and Mary (Nellie) Ellen Davidson (b1881 in Geelong, Victoria). Launcelot (an Engineer) and Nellie (a Costumier) married in 1908 in Melbourne, and lived in Casterton , where Launcelot was an Engineer. In 1918 the family settled in Melbourne, where Launcelot worked as a Welder and Mechanic.

Alan worked as a Ticket Writer in Melbourne for Royco Display Services before enlisting in the Army in 1941. He was in the Army in Brisbane in 1944 when he married Dorothy (Pat) Mabel Hall (b1919 in Toogoolawah, QLD) - Pat was serving in the AWAS (Private; Service No:QF266016). Following Discharge, Alan and Pat settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Alan was a Commercial Artist. Pat died in 2006 and Alan in 2010.
