Donald Buchanan enlisted the same day as his brother Leonard Alexander Buchanan, both posted to the 15th Battalion AIF. They were the sons of Samuel Alexander and Emily Mosley Buchanan, of Alphadale, Lismore, New South Wales.
Donald landed on Gallipoli on 16 June 1915. In his Red Cross wounded and missing file, it is stated that he went out with about 50 men in a demonstration or charge against Hill 60 on or about the 25 August 1915. Many of the fifty never returned, and fell not far from the Australian trenches, but their bodies could not easily be brought in. Nothing more was heard from Donald Buchanan and his remains were never found.
His brother Leonard died of wounds almost a year later to the day, in France on 29 August 1916.
