Died on this date – 8th January…… Private Henry William Saul was born at Collingwood, Victoria in 1875. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 21st July, 1915 as a 40 year old, single, Sawyer from Abbotsford, Victoria.

Private Henry William Saul embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 29th December, 1915 with the 7th Infantry Battalion, 13th Reinforcements.

On 29th March, 1916 Private Saul embarked from Alexandria on Troopship Transylvania to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force). He disembarked at Marseilles, France on 4th April, 1916. Private Saul was posted to 1st Divisional Base Depot at Etaples, France on 8th April, 1916. He was taken on strength of 7th Battalion in France from Reinforcements on 29th July, 1916.

He was admitted to hospital in Belgium on 20th September, 1916 then transferred & admitted to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station at Wimereux on 22nd September, 1916 with Rheumatism. Private Saul was transferred & admitted to 32nd Stationary Hospital at Wimereux, France on 22nd September, 1916 with Stricture Urethia. He embarked for England from Boulogne, France on 3rd October, 1916 on Hospital Ship St. Denis with Chronic Rheumatism.

On 4th October, 1916 Private Saul was admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, England with Rheumatism.
The Morning State of Sick (Army Form A. 27) recorded the following: “Admitted into Royal Bath Hospital, Harrogate on 1st December, 1916 from Birmingham with a diagnosis of Rheumatism. Transferred here 1 Jan 1917 for operation for Urethral Stricture.” The Hospital Admissions form confirms the details on the Morning State of Sick form.

Private Henry William Saul died at 1.35 am on 8th January, 1917 at 2nd Northern General Hospital, Leeds, England from Urethral Stricture (operation of Perineal Section) & Heart Failure.

He was buried in Killingbeck Cemetery, Leeds, England. The burial is listed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as Leeds Roman Catholic Cemetery – Screen Wall. D. 115. He now has a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone.
