82 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 18th January 1941, Private John George Parkes, 41st Battalion (Reg No-2399), seaman (Navigation Depot), from Mary Street, Wallsend, New South Wales and 25 Brunker Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. PRESBYTERIAN-12NE. 37.

Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 22nd May 1884 to William Easton and Jane (Johanna) Parkes of Plattsburg, N.S.W.; husband of Margaret Parkes nee Cunningham (married 1920, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1936, sleeping here), John enlisted August 1915 with the 31st Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 1.8.1916 (asthma), 26.4.1918 (trench fever).

John returned home on the 19th or 20th July 1919, being discharged 12th September 1919.

Nothing located on Trove about enlistment, returning home, etc.

Mr. Parkes’s name has been inscribed on the Wallsend Soldiers’ Memorial, Wallsend Municipal & District Roll of Honor, Wallsend & Plattsburg G.U.O. of Free Gardeners' (Royal Oak Lodge No 9) Roll of Honour, unveiled on the 24th June 1916, 24 names originally inscribed, 6 to be added, 34 names now inscribed, 3 Fallen, whereabouts unknown. Name not inscribed on the Wallsend St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
