Melville (Jim) Pethick (farmer) enlisted on22/12/1914 at Oaklands, SA aged 22 years. He embarked from Australia on 01/04/1915. As a member of the 10th and 11th Battalions AIF he fought at Gallipoli and in France. Private Pethick (service no 1790) served 4 years abroad, returning to Australia on the 'Kashmir' on 25/04/1919. Pethick rejoined the Army in 1942 aged 49 years; he served in Australia and wa promoted to the level of Sergeant (service no S74923). 

During his time convalescing in London, he saved a woman from drowning in the Thames - The Register (Adelaide, SA) Fri 11 Feb 1916 'A Soldier's Deed'.  Trove.

Jim Pethick married and settled in Renmark, SA. He was a member of the Renmark Irrigation Trust for many years. (Murray Pioneer - Renmark 1942-1950, Thu 19 Jul 1945 'BEAT OWN RECORD At TRUST ELECTION'

Jim Pethick worked at Bramfield (Eyre Peninsula) before World War 1. A postcard, from him - to Arthur Phillips is attached.
