Pte William Frederick Moseley Fowler
21st May 1895 - 24 Jan 1919

At the outbreak of war, aged 19 years, Fred served about 8 months in the Naval Reserve on Thursday Island. He enlisted in the AIF as a Private on the 20th July, 1915 at Liverpool. His mother wrote the letter giving her permission as Fred was only 20 years old.
On the 13th May, 1918 in the Somme region near the village of Corbie east of Amiens, Fred Fowler was gassed.

Records from Hurdcott Hospital on the 18th July note 'Since then has not been strong. Suffers from breathlessness and headaches and is unable to do any physical training. He has not improved during a stay of 4 months at the depot.'

On 9th December Fred boarded the Leicestershire for his voyage home. It seems his condition continued to deteriorate. He was on board but in a very serious condition when the Leicestershire docked in Melbourne. He was taken off and admitted to Caulfield Army Hospital. His parents were informed.

William Frederick Moseley Fowler died 2 days later on the 24th January, 1919 in Caulfield Army Hospital aged 23 years old. His parents brought his body back to Sydney. He is buried in Waverley Cemetery.
He is commemorated at the War Memorial at Wentworth Falls along with fellow fallen Woodford Academy student Robert Murray.

Lest we forget.
