Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force, Captain Charles Edward Viner was an accountant. However, his Military Service History indicated that he first joined the Australian Military on 17/06/1912 and serviced for a length of 14 years and 3 months, including his decorated military contribution to the first world war. It was noted that his first enrolment was incorrectly recorded under the name ‘Vincer’ and subsequently corrected to reflect his correct name.

He was born on July 16th, 1882, in Parkside SA. Captain Viner was a man of average build and height, standing at 172cm and weighing 63kg. Captain Viner served his country as a part of one of the 32nd infantry battalion as a dedicated and skilled military officer, he played a crucial role during this tumultuous time in history, witnessing first-hand the devastation and horrors of war.

Records show that Captain Viner enlisted to serve during the first world war on 16/06/1915 and was dispatched for active service on 11/11/1915. The ship he embarked on was HMAT KATUNA A13. Captain Viner served as part of the Finance Corps, as well as serving on the field in active duty. It appears that he was stationed predominantly in London and France and served for the duration of the war. Captain Viner returned to Australia, disembarking on 30/7/19. He was later discharged from duty on 21/9/19 following the “cessation of hostilities” after approximately 4 years of active war service aged 39 years.

There is information suggesting that Captain Viner was named as deserving special mention in the London Gazette for “conspicuous service”. This was noted in a letter addressed to his wife informing her of the special mention that he received for his outstanding service to the Australian Imperial Force.

Following the cessation of the war, Captain Viner returned to his wife in Adelaide. They lived their lives together in Arthur St, Unley.  Captain Viner died many years later on 16/08/1962, at 80 years of age. Captain Viner was peacefully laid to rest in Ashford Cemetery, South Australia, alongside his wife, Thirza Viner.
