Signalman Alan Donald Fitzgerald (Service Nos:V503592/VX147181) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 5 November 1942 as a Private with Australian Signals Training Battalion and then 5 Air Support Control - Trade Group Driver Mechanic. Signalman Fitzgerald served with 19th Lines of Communication (LoC) Signals (26 May 1943 - 27 October 1944 and 1 January 1945 - 4 August 1945) in Port Moresby and Lae, and was 'in the field' on 20 October 1943 when he enlisted in the AIF - 19th LoC Signals installed, maintained and operated telecommunications equipment and information systems. Signalman Fitzgerald was attached to 19th LoC Signals at Discharge on 22 November 1946.

Alan was born in Ararat, Victoria in 1922, eldest of two children of Sydney Alan Fitzgerald (b1897 in Ararat, Victoria) and Elva Victoria McKinnis (b1903 in Ararat, Victoria). Sydney (a Labourer at Dobie via Ararat) and Elva married in 1922 in Ararat, where they settled and raised their family and Sydney worked as a Labourer and Carter.

Alan worked in Ararat as a Junior Clerk with Victorian Railways before enlisting in the Army in 1942. In 1946 in Ararat  he married Gwenda Sarah Rackham (b1930 in Melbourne, Victoria). The couple settled in Ararat, where they raised their family and Alan worked as a Clerk and, from early 1960 as a Cartage Contractor/Fuel Merchant. Alan died in 1972 and Gwenda died in 2013.
