Son of Rowland Evan Owen and Letita Owen nee Bell of Malcolm Street, Heywood, Victoria.

Brother of Charles William Owen who was invalided back to Australia but when the ship was off Fremantle Charles collapsed and dying later in Fremantle Hospital on 30 September 1916 having served with the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance. Buried in the Fremantle Cemetery, Anglican area, Section Mon AA, Grave 1632.

On 20 March 1919 Bertie married Helena Sloan in St. Joseph Church, HIgh Road, Hendon, Middlesex, England.

Commenced return to Australia on 9 August 1919 aboard HT Ceramic disembarking on 27 September 1919
