Life Before the War

Percy George Wescombe was born in August 1889 in Upper Sturt, South Australia. He had a father of the name George Wescombe and a Mother of the name Lucy Ann Bartlett. The average height for men in 1916 was 5ft 6in, Percy was 3 inches taller than average with a height of 5ft 9in. He was slightly overweight for his height with a weight of 178lbs. He had a chest measurement of 37½ - 40 inches. Percy had a fresh complexion with blue eyes and dark hair. His teeth were classed as Dental Class C, meaning that his teeth were not very healthy. He was a Methodist, a Christian denomination that grew out of the revival of religion led by John Wesley, stressing both personal and social morality, and was created in disagreement with the Catholic ways. Before enlisting Percy worked as an Orchardist. Percy had never been involved in cadets or any war before WWI.

Life in Service

Percy George Wescombe enlisted on the 2nd of October 1916 in Adelaide. Percy embarked from Melbourne on the HMAT Ascanius to England on the 11th of May 1917. Percy fought as a gunner in the Field Artillery Brigades.

After the War

Percy George Wescombe was discharged (due to being medically unfit) after a total of 1 year and 210 days of service. He was discharged on the 31st of January 1918 and returned from England back to Australia. On the 9th of May 1928, Percy married Bessie. He lived for another 60 years in Australia and passed away on August 19, 1974, when he was 85 years old. Bessie Wescombe passed away 13 years later, on the 14th of December 1987. Percy and Bessie Wescombe’s grave can be located in the Upper Sturt Methodist Cemetery, South Australia.
