Oswald was initially rejected by the 1st A.I.F. due to having poor teeth. He had the problem attended to then joined the 27th Battalion. After mandatory training in England he proceeded to France on 25 June 1916. Oswald was soon hospitalised in Belgium in September with defective vision due to a detached retina. His condition required further treatment throughout 1916 in hospitals in Boulogne in France and England due to its severity. Oswald was promoted to Lance Corporal in May 1917 and made temporary Sergeant in September 1918. He eventually lost sight in the left eye and returned to Australia on the Mamari on 3 January 1919 and was discharged as medically unfit on 6 April.
