Son of Alfred Charles Oates and Keziah Gemmerson Oates nee Harper of Mountain River, Huon, Tasmania.

Brother of Claude Oates who returned to Australia on 13 February 1918 having served with the 51st  Battalion.

During 1919c Allen married Charlotte (Lottie) Pass of York Road, West Croydon, Surrey, England. Allen and Charlotte married on 26 July 1919 in the Church of Christ, Croydon, Surrey, England. Harold S. Birch officiated.

Commenced return to Australia on 9 January 1920  aboard SS Megantic disembarking on 20 February 1920 at Melbourne for onward travel to Hobart
