Born in Scotland, Alexander arrived in Queensland in about 1909. His next of kin was his sister, Elizabeth Mitchell Cherry who was living in Ireland at the time of his death.
It is unknown why he enlisted under an assumed name. His sister stated on his roll of honour form that his older brother, 12728 Private Thomas Cherry 11th Battalion, Royal Scots Regiment, was killed in action in France near Loos on 27 September 1915, aged 30.
