Younger of two brothers (Norman and Alan) who served in WWII, Warrant Officer II Alan George Miller (Service Nos:V24298/VX81646) initially served in the ACMF as a Private (7 November 1941 - 22 June 1942), and was a Corporal attached to 20th Motor Regiment when he enlisted (at Puckapunyal) in the AIF on 23 June 1942. Promoted to Sergeant in 1944, he served in Merauke with 20 Pioneer Battalion (18 February 1944 - 26 October 1944 and 13 December 1944 - 5 March 1945). Promoted to Warrant Officer II on 17 October 1945 and transferred to 12 Garrison Battalion, WOII Miller was attached to 20 Australian Motor Regiment at Discharge on 4 February 1946.
Lal was born in Broadford, Victoria in 1919, youngest of seven children of Walter Alphonsus Miller (b1869 in Ballarat, Victoria) and Annie Ellen Hangan (b1881 in Yea, Victoria). Walter worked as a Teamster in Broadford before he and Annie married in Yea in 1903. They settled in Broadford, where they raised their family and Walter was a Teamster.
Lal was a Carpenter in Broadford in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his discharge, in 1946 in Sunshine he married Florence Amy Nye (b1919 in Sunshine, Victoria) - Florence was working as an Operator in Sunshine. Lal and Florence settled in Broadford, where they raised their family and Lal worked as a Carpenter, and served as Chairman of the School Committee. Lal died in 1991 and Florence died in 2000.
