Lieutenant Stephen Joseph Smith was serving as 2nd Lieutenant with 10th Light Horse Regiment (Militia) when he enlisted in the AIF on 16 December 1915 and embarked from Fremantle for Suez on board HMAT A69 Warilda with 10th Light Horse Regiment on 16 February 1916. Transferred to 4th Divison Ammunition Column in Suez, 2nd Lieutenant embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on 6 June 1916 on board the Oriana and was promoted to Lieutenant on 23 August 1916. Lieutenant Smith embarked from England for Albany WA on 12 May 1917 on board HT Wiltshire, having received word that his wife was critically ill. Lieutenant Smith's appointment was terminated on 9 July 1917.

Born in 1880 in Perth WA, Stephen was fourth of ten children of Henry (Harry) Edward Smith (b1850 in Perth, WA) and Louisa Corrigan (b1851 in London, England). Louisa - a Domestic Servant in London from ten years of age, immigrated to Western Australia following her father's conviction and transportation for the murder of his wife in 1857. Harry and Louisa married in 1871 in Perth, WA where they raised their family and Harry was Superintendent of Mails.

Stephen started work as a Messenger Boy with WAGR in 1898, progressing to Cadet and then Clerk by 1901. He married Catherine Mary Madigan (b1833 in Melbourne, Victoria) in 1904 in Perth, WA and by 1910 the family was living in Tambellup where Stephen was Station Master. Stephen and Louisa were in Perth in 1915, and Stephen was working as a Clerk when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Stephen and Catherine lived in Perth where Stephen worked as a Clerk and Traveller, and at Nukarni via Merredin where he was a Farmer. Catherine died in 1949 and Stephen in 1956.
