Walter Harrel Hereford was born at Manchester, Lancashire, England in 1867.

He came to Australia & enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 13th August, 1915 as a 42 year old
Farmer from Katanning, Western Australia.

Private Herford, Service number 1397, embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on 1st November, 1915.

He was mustered as Gunner with 4th Divisional Artillery Column on 1st April, 1916.

In February, 1917 Gunner Herford was hospitalised with haemorrhoids & sent to England where he was operated on. After recovering he was reported as being Absent without leave on 3 occasions.


On 10th September, 1917 Gunner Herford was admitted to Military Hospital, Prees Heath, Shropshire, England suffering from Tuberculosis of lung, Pleurisy & Tubercular Pneumonia. He was reported as dangerously ill on 3rd October, 1917.


Gunner Walter Harrel Herford died at 12.05 pm on 4th October, 1917 from Tuberculosis of lung, Pleurisy & Pneumonia.

He was buried in Christ Church Churchyard Extension, Tilstock, Shropshire, England where 3 other Australians are buried.
