Lionel Bennetts was born in the year 1897, near the city of Adelaide, South Australia. He was a single, 18-year old when he enlisted on the 1st of June 1915. Before his enlistment, he worked as a drover. His rank was Gunner. 1332 was his regimental number. He stood at 5 feet ¾ inches (1.54m), weighing 124 lbs (56kg). He had brown eyes and dark hair. He was a Roman Catholic. He lived with his mother, Mrs. Katherine Bennetts.

Lionel Bennetts enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and underwent initial training before being deployed overseas. He served in the Australian Imperial Force for four years. Bennetts was placed in the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, 10th Reinforcement. He embarked on the 14th of September 1915, on the HMAT Ballarat Ship number A70. He was originally at the 3rd Light Horse Regiment in 1915 then was moved to the 5th Light Trench Mortar Battery in 1918.

iHe was deployed to the Gallipoli Campaign in November 1915 and successfully evacuated from the Peninsula, sent to Egypt for further training until being deployed to the Western Front.
