Raymond left Australia on 11 January 1916, joined the nursing staff of the 7th Australian General Hospital, Australian Medical Corps Base and transferred to the 2nd Field Ambulance on 6 March in Egypt. He went to serve in France on 30 March. Raymond continued his posting in France for the duration of the war during which he was hospitalised several times with influenza. While on the voyage back to Australia on the Beltana he was hospitalised with tonsillitis on 12 July 1919. Raymond arrived in Australia on 15 July and was discharged on 6 September.
