Ulmarra Soldier Honoured.
Another Ulmarra soldier, in the person of Corporal H. H. MacLeod, son of Mr. N. MacLeod, of that district, has gained distinction at the front. Corporal MacLeod's brother, Ald. A. MacLeod, has now received the details of the award, the official particulars supplied by the captain of the Fourth Australian Division of Artillery, being as follows: - “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack by the Second American Corps at St. Souplet on October 17, 1918. On that morning, whilst the 110th Howitzer Battery was firing a barrage in support of the infantry advance, Corporal MacLeod was in charge of a gun. The enemy retaliated on the battery position very severely, wounding all Corporal MacLeod’s detachment. He manned his gun alone and continued the barrage under a constant heavy shell fire. He set a fine example to the remaining detachments, who had been depleted by casualties. Corporal MacLeod was, for this brave action, awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and received the hearty congratulations of his C.O. – The Daily Examiner, Grafton, issue dated Tuesday March 4, 1919.
