Served during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

79 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 20th September 1945, Driver Henry Gibson, 9th Australian Machine Gun Company (Reg No-1129), miner from Teralba Road, Hamilton, New South Wales and 9 Kings Road, New Lambton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 75. ANGLICAN 2-145. 69.

Born at Stanley, Durham, England about 1870 to William, died 21.5.1921, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 75, buried on the Sunday afternoon of the 22.5.1921 at ANGLICAN 1-44. 82, no funeral notice, from Lambton Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W., and Dinah Gibson, died 5.5.1906, place unknown, age 57, mother of 8 sons, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-44. 84, from Lambton Road, Broadmeadow, N.S.W.; husband of Blanche Sophia Caroline Gibson nee Hoy, married 1893, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 13.11.1937, Mater Hospital, Waratah, N.S.W., age 64 years 9 months, sleeping here, from 9 Kings Road, New Lambton, N.S.W., Henry enlisted on the 3rd February 1916 with the 34th Battalion, age about 46!, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.

Granted leave from 24.1.1918 to 9.2.1918.

Admitted to hospital 21.2.1918 (myalgia & rheumatism).

Invalided to England 11.3.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 19.4.1918.

Henry was invalided home on the 12th June 1918, being discharged medically unfit (rheumatism) on the 23rd October 1918.

Mr. Gibson’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor.

The tragic circumstances of Henry’s death were reported - Man's Body on Railway at Hamilton - hit by train.

I have placed poppies at Henry’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
