Charles Zillman enlisted on 11 January 1916 and embarked for overseas service in June. Proceeding via Alexandria in Egypt, he arrived in France in late November 1916. He suffered from mumps in December (one of the coldest winters for decades), but was discharged to his unit (the 11th Machine Gun Company, attached to the 3rd Division) in January 1917. He was wounded in action on 9 June 1917, at the battle of Messines, in the buttocks. After recovering in England, and some time training, he rejoined his unit on 2 November, having missed the major fighting at Ypres. As soon as he returned, he was promoted to Lance Corporal, but was wounded again on 28 January 1918, this time in the knee. While his second wound was not so severe, he also became sick and only returned to duty in mid February. Zillman served right through the fighting of 1918, in which the 3rd Division was heavily involved, and was promoted Corporal on 9 November 1918, right at the end of the war. He returned to Australia halfway through 1919.

Charles Hadden Spurgeon ZILLMAN was born on 20th March, 1892 in Caboolture, Queensland
His parents were John William ZILLMAN and Ann Maria HOWS
He enlisted in Brisbane on 11th January 1916 with the 11th Machine Gun Coy.
Unit left Sydney on 5th June, 1916 on ship HMAT Borda
He returned to Australia on 10th May, 1919 & was discharged on 16th August, 1919

ZILLMAN - FRASER - On 12th February at St Stephens Cathedral by Rev. Fr. Molony, Charles H Zillman, fifth son of the late J.W. Zillman and Mrs. Zillman, Upper Caboolture married Flora L. L. (Pats) elder daughter of W. R. Fraser, Mitchell St. Kedron, Brisbane
Charles died on 18th August, 1961 aged 69 and is buried in Upper Caboolture Uniting Cemetery in Queensland - his wife Flora died11th Dec. 1996 aged 93 and is buried in the same cemetery
