Wounded in action at the Landing at Anzac 25 April 1915. A gun shot wound in the left leg which caused his evacuation to England. He was returned to Australia medically unfit 7 November 1915.
His brother 447 Corporal Alan Melrose Hayes was killed in action with the 7th Battalion on 25 April 1915.
