  • Jul 1918 War Diary, while carting Gas Cylinders to the front line Z. Special Coy. R.E. “No. 2962 Dvr. Lauman A.N. having arrived near the front line and it not being daring enough to proceed “He halted in a sunken road.” The Boche started to shell us. With my off side horse being wounded in the neck, the team started to bolt but were stopped by a steep bank which they could not get up. If the shell had been a few yards closer, all the 18 Limbers and horses would have been smothered with our own deadly gas.”
