James Patrick O'FARRELL (Service Number 111) was born on 25th March 1888 at Church Hill, Sydney. He worked for the NSW Tramways as a labourer in the Permanent Way Maintenance Branch in a temporary capacity from 5th November 1909. His position became permanent on 23rd March 1912.
He was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 17th August 1914. He enlisted at Randwick that same day, and being unmarried and with his father dead, he nominated his mother living at Calder Street Redfern as his next of kin.
He was allotted to the 4th Australian Infantry Battalion. O’Farrell embarked HMAT ‘Euripides’ at Sydney on 20th October 1914.
He embarked at Alexandria in early April for the Gallipoli Landing on 25th of that month.
On 15th August he was charged with drunkenness and received seven days Field Punishment No. 2, as well as forfeiting the next two issues of rum.
On 17th August he was promoted to Lance Corporal.
O’Farrell was killed in action on 31st August 1915.
He was buried in Browns Dip North Cemetery, 500 yards S of Anzac Cove, the same day, by Rev A McAuliffe. After the war in the rationalisation of cemeteries and isolated graves, his remains were exhumed and re-interred in the Lone Pine Cemetery, Anzac, 1⅜ miles SE of Anzac Cove.
