Ernest Thomas Lewis was born on September 1, 1897, in Renmark, South Australia.
Ernest enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force 19th January 1916 and embarked in April. He was attached to the Imperial Camel Corps in July 1916 and served in the Middle East.
By the end of December 1917, Thomas was returned to the 4th Anzac Battalion after serving with the 3rd Anzac Battalion. On 7 August 1918, he transferred into the 9th Light Horse Regiment, a mounted infantry unit that served in the Middle Eastern theatre of war.
On 28 March 1918, he was wounded in action. He was treated at the 43rd Stationary Hospital in Port Said, Egypt, with a gunshot wound to his left buttock. This injury was officially reported in a letter from the Base Records Office dated 16 April 1918, which was sent to his family back home.
Following his injury, Thomas was moved between multiple medical facilities and rest camps. On 22 April 1918, he arrived at the Desert Mounted Corps Rest Camp and was later sent to Abbassia for further recovery. He gradually returned to active duty, being retaken on strength on 16 May 1918 from the Anzac Base Depot Company.
Ernest resumed his service taken on strength with the 4th Anzac Battalion on 11 May 1918. However, later in the year on 23 October 1918, he was yet again hospitalised due to illness. He eventually recovered and once again rejoined his unit on 21 December 1918.
Throughout this time, he also participated in multiple troop movements around Egypt, including
Ernest was marked for repatriation home at Kantara, Egypt, on 27 October 1918, for his return to Australia. He was discharged 7th October 1919.
Ernest passed away on the 20th of September 1979 at the age of 82.
