Edmund Kelly was the son of Michael and Bridget Kelly of Brunswick, Victoria.

His younger brother, 3372 Pte. Richard Bartholomew (Richard Joseph) Kelly 14th Battalion AIF, had died of wounds in England only five days before Edmund died of wounds in France.

Another brother, 3342 Private Michael Kelly 5th Pioneer Battalion AIF returned to Australia in 1919.
