Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Austin McCallum’s date of death is recorded on the AWM Roll of Honour as 1 May 1915, when it almost certainly should be the 8 May 1915. He was buried at Redoubt Cemetery at Helles and the 8th Battalion did not move to Helles until the 6 May 1915.

His brother Clem McCallum was also in the 8th Battalion and in a letter home he said he was only a few yards from his brother when Austin was shot dead in the charge at Krithia. He added that he and some mates gave him a decent burial in the field.

The brother, 156 Corporal Clement William McCallum 8th Battalion AIF was to survive over 3 more years of hard fighting before he too was killed in action 11 August 1918.
