Private William Rennie Carlton (Service Nos:V65922/VX111474) initially served in the ACMF from 25 February 1941 to 21 July 1942, and was 'in the field in WA' on 22 July 1942 when he enlisted in the AIF - graded as Technical Storeman. Private Carlton served in the Northern Territory (12 September 1943 - 3 October 1944) and in Morotai and Ambon with 64th Infantry Battalion (28 May 1945 - 6 October 1945). He was Discharged on 4 December 1945. Siblings John, David and George also served in WWII.
Bill was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1922, youngest of four children of David Neilson Carlton (b1884 in Mt Egerton, Victoria) and Isabella (Elsie) Gertrude Cariss (nee Woolley; b1889 in Melbourne, Victoria). David worked as a Miner at Mt Egerton and Mt Magnet WA, and as a Labourer, Carter and Driver in Melbourne. He served briefly in the AIF in 1916 (Private; Service No:2627 - Discharged as medically unfit with fractured foot). David and Elsie (a Divorcee with two young children) married in 1918 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and David worked as a Labourer until his death in 1945.
Bill worked in Melbourne as a Factory Worker and Transport Driver before enlisting in the Army. In 1943 in Melbourne he married Nancy Irene Memery (b1923 in Melbourne, Victoria), and following his Discharge from the Army, Bill and Nancy settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Bill worked as a Process Refiner, Driver and Butcher. In 1972 Bill and Nancy moved to Labrador QLD, where Bill worked as a Butcher. Bill died in 1993 and Nancy in 2009.
