Biography contributed by Andreena Hockley
"Philip M. Ormsby, son of Mr. P. Ormsby, of Ellersie, enlisted on the 12th of August, 1915, and embarked with the 4th Reinforcements to the 29th Battalion on the transport Anchises in March, 1916. After training in England, he proceeded to France and joined his unit on the 22nd of September. He was wounded on the 29th of October, and died of wounds on the 2nd of November.
Philip Michael Ormsby was born in 1892. He took a short course of training at the Teachers' College in 1914, and then had charge of Schools 1630, Tyrendarra: 3482, Madalya: 2813, Skene's Creek; and 3180, Wongarra. He ceased duty on the 30th of August, 1915, in order to enlist. He was a reliable teacher, active and vigorous.
A letter from his parents states that Philip Ormsby gained the Merit Certifcate at the Ellerslie School, and then went to farm work for three years. Recommencing his studies unaided, he put in every spare moment at his books. Help came from a Presbyterian clergyman living seven miles away, who was good enough to give the lad a general tuition, with special attention to Greek and algebra. Next year, he took the short course at the Teachers' College, and also passed the Junior Public examination, gaining distinctions in algebra and Greek. He then took charge of the schools already mentioned.
Having enlisted towards the close of 1915, he sailed for Egypt in the following March. He reached England in July, and France in September. In two months came the end. He died of wounds at No. 36 Clearing Hospital, somewhere in France, on the 2nd of November, 1916."
