Stan was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1923, eighth of ten children of Henry John Newman (b1888 in London, England) and Nellie Louise Ashcroft (b1888 in Nottinghamshire, England). Henry was an Omnibus Conductor in 1909 when he and Nellie married in London. Following the deaths of three infant children, Henry and Nellie immigrated in 1913, arriving in Fremantle on board the Ajani. Henry and Nellie settled in Perth, where Henry was an Iron Worker and Tin Smith, when Henry enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:4440). Following his Discharge, Henry and Nellie lived in Fremantle, where Henry was a Steward, before moving to Northam in the mid 1920s. Henry worked as a Night Watchman/Caretaker in Northam, and in the late 1940s returned to Fremantle, where he worked as a Cleaner.

Stan worked as an Assayer's Assistant in Northam before enlisting in the Army in 1942. Following his Discharge, Stan lived in Fremantle, where he worked as a Boiler Attendant and Wool Presser. Following his father's death, Stan lived with his mother and sister Phyllis in Perth, and worked as a Storeman.
