Brother of Edmund(Edward) James Unwin who returned to Australia on 5 July 1918 having served with the 14th Battalion; Herbert Allen Unwin who return to Australia on 28 June 1919 having served with the 58th Battalion and Thomas Henry Unwin who was killed in action on 23 March 1917 while serving with the 29th Battalion. He is buried in the Beaumetz Cross Roads Cemetery, Row C, Grave 5

25 June 1917 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 8th Battalion and with the rank of Private

24 August 1918 - wounded. Gassed

Commenced return to Australia on 21 December 1918 aboard HT Mamari disembarking on 4 February 1919

19 February 1919 - discharged at the 3rd Military District as medically unfit due to gassing.
