Alfred Leonard Child
Alfred Leonard Child was my maternal grandmother’s youngest brother. There were 11 children in the family in total.
He was born in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire and after serving in the British army he emigrated to Australia. He lived at Roseworthy near Adelaide and was a farm labourer for an Orchardist.
Upon War being declared he re-enlisted with the 10th Infantry Battalion, AIF.
Having survived the battle at Gallipoli, he was killed in action on 2nd October 1917.
I believe he was killed at the Battle of Polygon Wood.
I obtained his service records from Canberra several years ago and visited Polygon Wood in August 2018.
Having no known grave, Alf’s name is recorded on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium and I was honoured to be able to lay a wreath in his memory in August 2018.
I have lived in Beaconsfield all my life and am proud that great uncle Alf’s name is on the Beaconsfield War Memorial - a few hundred yards from where he was born.
