Gunner Thomas Herbert Matthews (Service No:NX73984) enlisted in the AIF on 9 December 1941 as a Private with General Details Depot and servedd with Field Training Regiments - Driver Mechanic. Posted to 2/3 Tank Attack Regiment, Gunner Matthews served in the Middle East (23 August 1942 - 28 February 1943), New Guinea (9 August 1943 - 8 May 1944) and Borneo (30 July 1945 - 8 November 1945). Gunner Matthews was attached to 2/3 Tank Attack Regiment at Discharge on 25 January 1946. He was one of five brothers (Lindsay, Jack, D'arcy and Neville) who served in WWII.
Tom was born at Peak Hill, NSW in 1914, eighth of ten children of Sidney Richard Matthews (b1882 in Obley via Molong, NSW) and Emily Mary Clarissa Tyler (b1882 in Cobar, NSW). Sidney and Emily (both 17 years of age) married in 1900 in Peak Hill, where they settled and raised their family, and Sidney was an Auctioneer (partner in the firm Messrs Roache and Matthews). By 1930, Sidney and Emily had moved to Sydney, where Sidney worked as a Clerk.
Tom was working as a Bookmaker in Sydney where, in 1940, he married Sylvia Beach (b1913) - Sylvia was a Saleswoman in Coogee. Tom was a Driver Mechanic in Sydney when he enlisted in the Army in 1941, and following his Discharge in 1946, he and Sylvia separated. Sylvia died in Waverley, NSW in 1959 and Tom died in Peak Hill, NSW in 1965.
