Private Alfred Chapman (Service No:875) enlisted in the AIF on 7 September 1914, and was attached to 11th Infantry Battalion on 2 November 1914 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for Alexandria on board HMAT A11 Ascanius. Private Chapman then embarked from Alexandria for the Gallipoli Penisnula on 2 March 1915, and in May was WiA at the Dardanelles - GSW to his leg. Private Chapman wrote home from Kaisr el Aini Hospital in Cairo in June, describing his stay in hospital and some challenges with healing of his leg (Trove; 1915). Private Chapman embarked from Egyypt on 15 August 1915 on board HT Themistocles, and was attached to 11th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 22 August 1916.

Alfred was born in 1895 in Albany, Western Australia, sixth of eleven children of Alfred James Chapman (b1863 in Suffolk, England) and his first wife Helena Manton (b1866 in Mt Barker, South Australia). Alfred Snr served with the Royal Navy in England (Boy/Seaman; Service No:112514) in 1880/1881, and immigrated to South Australia in 1882. Alfred Snr was a Labourer when he and Helena married in 1884 in Adelaide, and the couple moved to Western Australia in 1884. Alfred Snr and Helena settled in Albany, where they raised their family and Alfred was a Timber Worker before joinng the WA Land Coy as a Railway Worker, working on construction of the Great Southern Railway between Beverley and Albany. Alfred transferred to the WAGR when it took over, and worked as an Engine Driver until retirement. Alfred was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, and also established an orchard at Millbrook via Albany. Following Helena's death in 1911, Alfred remarried in 1914 to Elizabeth Ann Hall (nee Oates; b1865 in Clunes, Victoria) - Elizabeth was a Widow working as a Dressmaker in Perth.

Alfred served with the Senior Naval Cadets, and started work with WAGR at Midland Junction as a Junior Labourer. In 1914 when he enlisted in the AIF he was a Labourer in Albany. Following his Discharge, Alfred was working in Perth as a Clerk when, in 1922, he married Lillian May Jones (b1899 in Chidlow, Western Australia). Alfred and Lillian settled in Perth, where they raised their family and Alfred worked as a Clerk and an Accountant. Alfred died in 1961 and Lillian in 1972.
