Edwin was the ninth of fourteen children of Trevillian (Walter) Henry Griffin (b1877 in Dunedin, New Zealand) and Ada Frances Towton (b1889 in Perth, WA). Walter had arrived in Victoria with his parents and siblings in the 1880's and in 1904 was a Horse Trainer in Kalgoorlie, WA. Ada was the daughter of well known Horse Trainer, Breeder and Jockey George Andrew Towton, who had stables at Belmont in Perth, WA. Walter and Ada married in 1906 in Perth WA where they raised their family.

Edwin was a Pottery Worker in Perth WA in September 1941 when he enlisted in the Army (Private; Service No:W20948). He served with 16 Infantry Battalion and 32 Australian Works Coy in Darwin (23 March 1943 - 2 November 1944) and New Britain - Jacquinot Bay (21 November 1944 - 5 June 1945). Edwin was Discharged in December 1945. Brothers Ronald, Walter, Henry, Allan and Herbert also served in WWII.

Returning to Perth WA, Edwin was living in Belmont and working as a Tiler in 1948 when he married Betty Ilene Bastow (b1924 in Collie, WA) - Betty was a Saleswoman. The couple settled in Perth, living in Maylands and Scarborough where Edwin was a Tool Setter and Betty a Saleswoman. Betty died in 2009 and Edwin in 2015.
