Private Melville John Stanley Henshaw (Service No:3399) initially enlisted in the AIF in May 1915 and was rejected as medically unfit. On 22 May 1917 he enlisted as a Private attached to 60 Infantry Battalion and embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Port Melbourne A16 on 16 July 1917. Private Henshaw was WiA in France (GSW) in 1918 and invalided to England where he transferred to 59 Infantry Battalion. Embarking from England on board HT Shropshire, Private Henshaw was Discharged on 15 June 1919. Brothers Clifford and Ralph were both KiA in WWI.
Born in 1891 in Zeehan Tasmania, Melville was the eldest of six children of John Henshaw (b1863 in New Norfolk, Tasmanai) and Elizabeth Mary Woodward (b1865 in Port Cygnet, TAsmania). John (a Labourer) and Elizabeth married in 1890 in Hobart, Tasmania and settled in Zeehan where they raised their family.
Melville was a Labourer in Melbourne when he enlisted in the AIF and had served with the Rifle Club Reserves and Cadets. In 1920 Melville was a Conductor when he married Ruby Tucker (b1895 in Emu Bay, Tasmania). Melville and Ruby settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Melville worked as a Conductor. Melville died in 1974 and Ruby in 1976.
