Son of Kate Ada PETTITT (formerly STEENSON), Moorbank, Liverpool, New South Wales and the late John STEENSON was an employee of the Clyde Engineering Works.

Gordon Geoffrey STEENSON was born at Liverpool about September 1893. He worked for the Railways as a locomotive cleaner.
Steenson enlisted at Liverpool on 18th May 1915 and gave his mother, Ada Steenson living in Liverpool as his next of kin. He was allotted to the 13th Battalion. He embarked HMAT ‘Wandilla’ at Sydney on 14th June 1915. By 2nd August he was on Gallipoli. He was wounded with a gunshot to his leg five days later and evacuated to Mudros (on the Greek island of Lemnos),. While there at the No. 1 Canadian Stationary Hospital he developed acute gastro-enteritis. On 15th October he returned to the battlefront.
The peninsula was evacuated in December and Steenson reached Alexandria on the ship ‘Tunisian’ on 3rd January 1916. He was Absent Without Leave on 30th April. This cost him three days confined to barracks and a days’ pay,. In May he transferred to the 4th Australian Pioneer Battalion at Serapeum. On 4th June he proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front in France through Alexandria and Marseilles where he passed on 11th June.
Steenson was killed in France on 31st July 1916. He and buried in Gordon’s Dump Cemetery, between Albert and Bapaume, France.
A pension 25/- per fortnight was awarded to his mother Kate Ada Pettit from 28th February 1918.
